It can be finicky and like IP Daley says it records more like a VCR than a DVR. Very similar chinese made box like the HomeWorx model IP Daley linked to above. I use an iView 3500STB-II with a 500gb external Western Digital "My Passport" HDD plugged in via USB. It just depends on how much you want to spend to get your entertainment fix without sitting through commercials.

I know you're trying to avoid commercials which this doesn't address, but a cheap Android HDMI stick with a few Android apps and a web browser that supports Flash to fill in the remaining gaps can be had for less than $100 these days.

Honestly, there isn't too much (outside of current syndication content) available OTA that isn't also streamed for free online either through Hulu, CBS.com, Crackle, and the various network websites. but you're getting into $400+ lifetime costs. There's also Tablo, which requires a subscription or another cost for lifetime guide updates. Otherwise they basically operate like an old VCR. The only shortcoming of these products is that it uses OTA clock broadcasts to set the time on the device, and sometimes the clock from the broadcasters can be. I've also seen DTV tuners for $40 that let you plug in an external USB hard drive and turn them into DVRs. They usually run around $180-300 new, depending on the storage capacity.

So what kind of programming actually checks channel status and then DELETES channel numbers and eventually DELETES entire events? POOR PROGRAMING, that's what kind. If you're not lucky you need to make sure you have a good return policy before you buy. If your lucky, the channel you want will not disappear and you may never even notice that this problem exists. So let me save everyone some effort, they ALL suffer from this flaw. During these 'blinks' the strength meter drops to 1 dot even though the signal strength, as measured by my standard converter box sitting next to it has not changed. So it is running some subroutine that checks something and actively deletes programing.

When turning the box on while tuned to one of these channels (if you've put it in standby) if it blinks twice at you it is deleting either the channel or the entire event. Leaving the box on a different channel is also of no help. Turning the box to standby guarantees the programs will be deleted on those channels. This is what I have noticed - Leaving it turned on and on these channels is your only hope of recording them,

Sienoc has no customer support that I can find, but strangely, their book tells me to come here for software updates!ĭuring this time I have replaced my indoor antenna with an outdoor antenna which doubled signal strength, but that did not resolve the problem. I contacted ematic but they never replied. I contacted Mediasonic technical support and iview technical support and both claimed that they know nothing about this. I now have a Sienoc generic box which does exactly the same thing AND is off date by 5 days (See, it can be worse). Guess what, it did exactly the same thing also. I then bought and returned an iView 3500STBII. IT DOES EXACTLY THE SAME THING! I returned it also, as the only reason I bought either one is to record programs on 9.1. I returned this box as defective and bought an ematic 103b. It is confined to 1 group of channels, the ABC network which is in my area 9.1,2 & 3. I have had the disappearing booked issue also.
